Not using no claims Bonus

I have 6 years no claims discount and I did not renew my insurance in september when it expired. I sold my car shortly after as my partner and I now only have 1 car and received my 6 years no claims evidence from my old insurer. We got 1 years free insurance with our new car through Volkswagon. When I called to set up the insurance they asked if I had any no claims, I said 6. The person setting up the insurance said I should consider "asking my old insurer if they could keep my details for a year" as the no claims do not make a difference to me this year as the insurance is free from Volkswagon and I am essentially just putting it on the line for no reason. He didnt put the no claims on my insurance to give me time to consider.

I already have the evidence from my old insurer so Im assuming its unlikely they will keep my details on hold for a year. My question is if I leave it off my volkswagon insurance is it still valid when i come to renew my insurance next October (and have to pay for it)?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me

The norm is for NCD to be useable for up to 2 years, so you should be fine when you come to pay for insurance again.

What they said is pretty meaningless. Your old insurer's views on your NCD is irrelevant - it a prospective new insurer's view that counts.

As above, a 2 year gap should be fine.
