Electric-only flat / Pre-pay meter
I have just moved into a ground floor flat and it is a small electric-only flat with a pre-pay meter. After reading various threads on here I feel like I have made a really bad decision and I am kicking myself for it.
Is this set-up really as bad as every says it is? What should I do to keep my electric bill down? The flat also isn't very well insulated.
Luckily I am only on a 6 month tenancy, is it going to an expensive 6 months? Especially with winter around the corner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pick a good tariff and if the flat is as small as you say then it won't be that much more expensive than a dual fuel property. You won't have gas standing charges to pay to start with which will save enough to cover the increased cost of electricity. An E7 tariff heating storage heaters at night don't cost that much more than gas. Electric heating is 100% efficient and gas is not but heat is lost from the storage heaters during the day so make sure you close the output damper each night and you won't waste too much.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Consult a comparison site to find the best deal for you.
You could ask the landlord for written permission for you to change the meter to a credit one, if that is what you would prefer. If granted, you could start looking into that too ... but if you are only planning on staying 6 months I probably wouldn't bother.0 -
Also make sure there is no debt from the previous occupant (or standing charge from a void period) on the meter.
(Ideally you should start a new contract with a new key with the supplier.)0 -

The OP must open a new account with the supplier.
This will also wipe out any debt (if there is any) on the meter .. it may take up to 3 top ups for this to show correctly on the meter.0 -
Electric only flat so will probably be an eco 7 two rate prepayment meter.Pretty horrendous day rates on these if it is Eco 7.You can see the kwhr tariffs by scrolling through the blue button, screen "H " will be the day rate and I think "J " will be the night rate .Expect as much as 20 p /kwhr for the day rate price.
To get these high tariffs lowered will mean moving away from prepay and changing meter to a standard Eco 7.0
