My Conservatory Is Unusable!

We had one on our old house, south facing.
In the summer it was a glorified drying room for laundry (with a window open). In the winter it was somewhere to store drinks and keep them cool, especially handy at Xmas and New Year.

Mine is North facing and gets the sun from early afternoon. It used to get very hot (and freezing in winter) until 2yrs ago when I had a new roof out on.
They are lightweight tiles over a lot of insulation - I think it was called supalite. I won't kid you about the cost - it wasn't pretty - but we barely used the room from October to April. So I invested and now we have a year round space. The temperature obviously still varies to a point, but nothing like before. I also have vertical blinds for when the sun is lower in the sky, and a slimline wall-mounted panel heater (2kw) that works on a thermostat and heats up the room really quickly when needed.
I find its a lovley place to sit now, and the kiddies can play out there any time.Bossymoo

North East facing conservatory and I love it. Glass roof.
We live in a bungalow so it gets sun all through Spring summer and autumn. Since we had the extra insulation in the loft the house has actually been cold in the summer, but opening the conservatory doors into the dining room has given a thermal boost.
When I'm sitting there in the heat of the summer I have my head in the shade of the dining room wall and a couple open windows on edge side give a through flow of air.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

My home office is south facing and used to get stupidly hot, especially as I have to often shut the door as I am on calls and the kids can get a bit noisy.
I got a company in who fitted reflective film to the windows which does a great job. It does make the room a bit darker but keeps it a lot cooler on hot days. This might be the best low cost option.
We also used to have a conservatory that got very very hot....the best was when the plastic surround of the thermometer melted. We had it replaced with a proper brick built, tiled roof extension, but this was not a cheap option."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
