I agree, contact the seller and offer them a chance to resolve the situation, before leaving negative feedback.

What you are not considering is that the difference between 2nd class and 1st recorded does not equate to £2.85.

It is more likely closer to the difference between small parcel and medium parcel, i.e. the seller hasn't accurately measured item, doesn't pack until sold, or is hoping for sale of multiple items for which a medium parcel will be required. And that... is not by design, but due to sellers getting fingers burnt at the post office.

Which would fall under 'mistake' clearly. Which is still the sellers problem.

We can throw up lots of little permutations which change things slightly or make things appear in a different light but there is one simple fact. The item wasn't posted for the price charged, or even close % wise, and the packaging was minimal.

If others don't want to leave a negative for it, fine, that's up to you. I'm negativitying them for being sneaky. A considerate and legit seller would automatically issue the refund without contact, unless of course they were happy to pocket the difference.

I think it's bad advice from posters above to leave negative feedback. If you did this every time you weren't happy with the postage charged, when people click on your own page "feedback left for others" you will appear like a serial complainer, problem customer, or worse.

I do not agree. It shows you are not someone to try and fob off, it should ideally be taken as a warning to potential sellers. If I pay for a service which I do not get I have two choices (1) Complain to the seller to see if they will put things right (2) If I am still not happy I can take it further, with eBay this would be leaving poor stars and negative feedback.

I also offer free P&P and as well as it being clearly displayed in postage costs what service I am using, I state it in bold red writing on the actually listing what postage service I use!

I am pleased to say as a seller of 12 years I have had one negative feedback about 8 years ago (for an item that went missing to Italy) and my stars are perfect! I have only ever left negative feedback when I have been unhappy with a service and the seller has usually ignored any request to rectify the problem.

You take a somewhat confusing stance, because some of the posters above believe the original poster should leave negative feedback as a first recourse.

    Great point !

I too, don't wrap any item until it is sold and I know it has to be posted. When I first started I would wrap the item, then be annoyed when it was collected in person, as I had wasted stacks of brown parcel tape.

I have a set of scales but often just take an informed guess at hhe postage.

A few times I have priced an item as a small parcel (the £2.80 one) but at the PO, they have squeezed the parcel through the slot meaning it's now a large letter.

I don't want to charge for a large letter, then find it has to go as a small parcel.

I suppose I could easily make a 25mm slot, then know exactly. Even then, some staff at my local PO only let it go cheaply if it goes through the slot by itself, others seem to drag it through.
  • If buying something on ebay i want quickly, I often pay a little more for a seller sending 1st class rather than second. The issue here for me would be the time rather than the price.

    That's a different issue though.

Paying the advertised price and receiving what you paid for is fair.

Paying first class, receiving second class is clearly not getting what you paid for. As most people here are sellers they think leaving a negative for this is harsh. The seller is clearly either neglectful or a chancer. Either way the seller is at fault.
