Help!!! Electric and Gas sky high!!

Moved into my first home in June into an Eco-friendly new build. Been paying electricity monthly by providing E.On a reading every month!! There's two of us so it's been roughly £20 a month...brilliant!!

Today received our electricity bill along with our gas which is set up as quartet (not sure why) and our bill is £130!!!!

£75 is gas and £55 is electricity.

I'm really concerned as we haven't been using anymore electricity than we usually have and this is before we've had the heating on and we are never home during the day.

I need advice on what to do!! I can't afford these kind of payments :(

EOn seem to think it may be a faulty meter...

Hi. Bear in mind that before you use a single kWh of energy, you will pay E.oN about 22p per day standing charge for gas and 16p a day for electricity. £20 a month looks to be very low to me. What usage per year, in kWhs, is this based on? Could you post the actual readings that you gave to E.oN and your tariff.

FWiW, we have PV solar and pay about £27 per month for electricity. That equates to about 6kWhs per day.

Has E.on actually been using your readings ? Are the readings on your bill Actual or Estimated ? What tariff ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Post your actual kWh usage and the no. of days billed: £££'s tell us absolutely nothing.
You did not seriously think that you could heat, hot water and power any property for £240pa, however eco-friendly it might be? £1,250pa would be a typical average.
Your usage will soar once the heating goes on, so assuming gas CH and DHW, you can expect to use maybe 75% of your total gas usage in the coldest 3 months of the year.
However as above I also suspect that previous billing has been on estimated readings only and you've now been hit with a catch up bill-the bills will tell you all you need to know.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Hi macman, just to let you know that we must be very fortunate as our electric only costs us £22per month on direct debit. We just make sure that everything (except the broadband) is switched off when not being used.

Every standby light costs money, even leaving your washing machine switched on at the socket when not in use costs you money.

I don't think this is necessarily true. I may be wrong, but things only use electricity when they draw power and unless a washing machine has a "plugged in" light or standby mode it's not going to use a amount of electricity that is noticeably going to effect your usage and certainly not an amount that makes it worth the hassle of scrambling behind the machine to unplug it between uses.

Hi Shrimply, we thought the same but some machines seem to have an inbuilt standby when switched on at the socket. We turn all ours off to make sure we are not wasting money and hey presto the bills have come down.

    Good morning fioney25,

The guys have given some brill advice so thank you for this.

I agree with them, we could do with a bit more information please, did you read the meter when you first took responsibility of the property? Has this been used for billing?

I see you say the electric is billed monthly and gas quarterly, this is a bit odd to me, but I think it's because you've put an electric read online each month and produced a bill. You may find it easier to pop your electricity and gas reads in online at the same time so the bills stay together.

I'm also a little bit surprised that E.ON seem to think it's a faulty meter, who advised you of this? There's normally a few things we can look at first.

Could you possibly take a read at the same time each day for a few days, see if you can see any spikes.

If you can let me know, I'm always happy to help and do what I can.

    Thank you

    Helena :)

Interesting, well I'm all for saving electricity but this is one case where I'm just going to keep telling myself it is not true. There is far, far, too much effort involved in unplugging my machine :rotfl:
