there are only 2 types ide or atapi, so if you have the wrong one, you need the other. Try ebuyer, they also sell 2.5" caddy's so you can use the one you have for backups.

They do come in different thicknesses, something you need to be careful of
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

What make, model, type & size did you get?

Apparently any 'Any 2.5", 9.5 mm EIDE notebook drive will work just fine' - taken from this thread at the Dell Forums.

Don't know if it's any use, but apparently an Inspiron 8600 can take 2 hard drives - see here. G

Edit: Too slow, albertross beat me to it

Have you tried searching for Dell original parts? For example, I very quickly found drives from LaptopBits or from pcupgrade.co.uk. I've never used these companies so am not recommending them, but they would seem to be an option.

Yes, an option, but very expensive compared to eBuyer's offerings* for example. G

*The Boss, ignore the ATAPI/SATA ones in the list

I have worked it out - I needed to take the attachment from my old hard drive and put it onto the new hard drive.

I wondered why the connecion things looked totally different!
