Evening wedding Do

Options
Have been invited as a plus one to a wedding of a friend of my new boyfriend. I havent met any of his friends before and I want to make a good impression.

He doesnt know the bride, but knows the groom well through work.

I dont want to spend much money (preferably none at all!)

He hasnt a clue about what women wear to weddings, and I havent been to one for about 15 years....

Its in a posh hotel...we are just going to the evening reception.

Would a black cocktail type dress be appropriate (fairly short) or is it not done to wear black to a wedding. I have a few nice classic "little black dresses" but didnt want to offend by turning up in black...

or if I wanted to splash out a tiny bit are there any fashiony websites which would be able to show me the type of understated thing that a 40something woman should wear to a reception?

Thanks :)

  • I was very recently at a wedding and reception in a posh hotel and there were a few black cocktail dresses so I think the rules on this may be changing. I personally try to avoid black, but I don't think ill of people who wear it to weddings. If I did need to do it because I couldn't afford a different outfit, then I'd probably try to soften it with a colourful pashmina, cardigan and or shoes.

Posh LBD with outsize jewelry, clutch bag and heels good look! You will need a jacket .....borrow if necessary. Red lipstick. Do wear hosery! Think being accompanied by James Bond.
You do not need to be so understated!

I've been to 4 weddings in the last 6 months, wore black to all of them! Loads of people wear a LBD to weddings. I'd just make sure you have a pair of tights on that's all. Some nice costume jewellery to dress it up some more. If you're worried about looking too dark drape a colourful pashmina over your arms (check ebay, dirt cheap!) I did this with a sleeveless dress as I can't stand my arms. Went with a royal blue pashmina and it looked lovely.

got a new dress in TK M today....bargain price of £8 because some of the lace had come astray but a bit of black thread and a needle will sort that out!!

Its a black lacey dress, sleeveless, not too short, but it has a cream/gold underdress so the black is broken up a bit yet isnt revealing.

does that sound OK?? Im keeping it anyway as it was so cheap!

But what sort of tights would I wear please?? I have nice classy black stiletto shoes...but someone once told me never to wear black tights with a cocktail dress or at least wear the sheerest skin coloured tights I could find....does that advice still stand??

I think black is fine, I'm getting married next year and wouldn't have a problem with it.

I'd have a problem with white/cream/champagne/ivory or my bridesmaid colour! I am informing people of what it is and not expecting them to guess what they have to avoid :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I'm off to my oldest friend's June's wedding in November both the 'do',meal and evening as well.I asked her what sort of thing and bless her she said 'Don't buy anything you'll never wear again'. as its 14th November its going to be probably quite nippy so my eldest DD and I are going for a mooch to John Lewis in Bluewater after she comes home from Las Vegas at the end of October.

I have known my friend for almost 50 years and I am so pleased to be going to her special day its taken her chap 21 years to get her up the aisle as she swore she'd never get wed again. I thought of a LBD but then remembered about the weather and time of the year, so I too am not too sure of what to buy.

My DD said why not a nice trouser suit as you can dress it up a bit for the 'do' and then wear it afterwards anywhere but I'm not sure about that either what do you think ?

Eeeeek!... have you ever seen "Pretty Woman"? :rotfl:
  • The dress sounds lovely and will look fine I'm sure. I have recently worn a black knee-length dress with gold/cream lacy trim to a wedding reception and it was fine. As others have said the only colour off limits is white! I would say could you go for gold/cream accessories rather than black maybe just to lighten it up a bit? A clutch bag and/or shawl/jacket in those colours would look lovely. Shops always do clutches cheaply, you should get one for less than £10 on the high st or in a supermarket. Definitely sheer tights and if the shoes are open toe make sure they are the kind that don't show. You will look lovely but the most important thing is just to be confident - remember the friends will notice your smile and manner when meeting you before they even glance at your outfit :)
