Washing Machine won't take any water!

Options
Typical, hubby goes on 1st ever business trip and washing machine packs in.

The lights come on, but it doesn't fill up. If I turn it to spin, it will spin but then grinds to a halt when it should drain.

Machine is approx. 8 years old. Has been mended twice for various things. Just an average model.

Can anyone give advice on what is wrong & whether worth getting someone in.

If I need to replace, i'd like one with a better spin, quick wash program, larger drum and more energy efficient. Think I can get one of these for £250, so loathed to spend too much on repairs given age of machine.

Thanks for the advice.

    Hi,

What machine is it, it does make a difference? To me that's like telling a car mechanic you have a car, it's stopped and expecting him to know what's wrong. ;)

It sounds like a simple water valve or pump fault but could be other things as many of the Italian machines, notably Candy/Hoover, have the neutral feed for the pump fed through the valve. So, the pump goes OC and the machine won't fill.

If you do decide to replace have a read at this first, a buying guide I wrote, which is probably best described as brutal probably, but it is truthful.

    Hi,

You'd have to check it with a meter, but it does sound as if it's just the pump that's open circuit. If so, they're not that expensive really.

Had a similar problem with our machine once when the water wouldn't run in. It was due to the filter on the cold water inlet being blocked with limescale. We are in a hard water area and gradually the filter blocked. Worth undoing the water inlet pipe on back of machine (having first turned off water supply!) and seeing if there is a filter there. Although I would have thought that you'd previously noticed slow filling of machine if this was the case.

could be a simple airlock. take the top off the machine and there is a black plastic thingy (water level device?) with a very small tube attached to it. remove the tube and blow down it.
    replace and switch on.

    edit.
ps. it could also be the door lock. machine wont work if the safety catch isnt working properly.
    Get some gorm.
