Does this cancellation charge sound reasonable ?

I took out van insurance 7 days ago with AUTONET insurance

I cancelled today because I no longer need the van

I initially paid £180 up front for 12 month policy

He just informed me that I'd only be getting £90 back

So that's £90 for 7 days cover
He broke it down by saying that the actual insurer "Zenith" charges £40 minimum cancelation charge and that they as the broker/ administrator charge £50

This is all within the cooling off period

Sound fair to you ?

As long as you were informed about the various charges then it's fair.

It's the norm to get cancellation charges whenever you cancel.

In your case you used a broker so have their charges to pay as well as any non refundables the insurer charges
  • My other concern is that i looked at Zeniths quoted cancellation charge and their website states it's £25 and AUTONET told me it was £40. I'm all for a cancelation charge but £90 seems excessive .

Ask for a full breakdown of the charges and take it from there. (Dispute any that are an overcharge). (Are you sure your Zenith product bought through a broker is the same as the one you have seen online?)

As posted, by using the "services" of a broker, you have charges coming from both the insurer and the broker.

Your not being charged £90 to cancel, your being charged £90 for 7 days cover, the cancellation charges and any other charges.

Possible their short term rates apply for just 7 days cover?
