Hi, I change energy supplier every year and have found that it usually takes between 6-8 weeks to finalise the account and sometimes even longer to get a refund.

Energy companies work in mysterious ways. Nothing will happen until the switch actually goes through. Why the billing should take 40 days is a question that only NPower can answer. Some have an escalating refund process: that is, the greater the credit, the longer it takes to get the refund approved.

    Edit:

NPower may be hiding behind this obligation. 'Ofgem rules require a supplier to take “all reasonable steps” to send a final bill within six weeks of a customer switching suppliers showing anything that is owed.'

  • When was your last actual bill/statement produced and was it based on actual reads? Just becsuse your account was previously in credit does not guarantee that when the switch tskes place this will still be the case.

Hi My Credit is twice my monthly winter amount.
Last bill 8/9/15. Own readings, 6 month's since NPower have read.
    Change over date 8/10/15.

    Yes, that is correct.
A supplier will not usually return any credit on the account once you have decided to close that account until they have produced a final bill.

Up to 40 days to produce a final bill is not bad actually. nPower in the past were told by Ofgem to leave it much longer! They actually have up to a year to produce a final bill.

The only thing you can do if things were going to take , say up to a year, would be to follow their complaint procedure - but they would still have 8 weeks (48 days) to produce a final bill, and then they still might not , and you could go to the ombudsman, but it will probably take another 3 months before the ombudsman starts to look at the complaint.

Of course, it works both ways. In this instance you think the supplier will owe you money, but it could be that you owe the supplier money, but the supplier can't pursue you for that until they have produced the final bill.
