I do mine using the national debthelpline on there they have a payment calculator and template letters you can download them all today to get started.

If you want anyhelp just shout or pm me.

First thing to ensure is that if you have any debts with your current account then you must open another bank account so they cannot take funds out of your account.

I agree with RD about opening the bank account. This was one mistake that cost me dear at the begining.

I also handle my own DMP at present as I was originally turned down by the CCCS as I was overspending £64 a month. When I spoke to the CCCS they were fantastic and even though couldnt offer me a DMP they provided me with a income/expenditure list and some templates that I used to get the ball rolling. Even if you contact them you are not obliged to take the DMP if you do not wish.

Another tip is if you are doing it yourself to begin with it is very stressful. Infact that may be a understatement. The Creditors try all types of tactics and you need to stay strong and make sure you are firm with them. Also get everything in writing however much they inist that its ok.

Good luck and make sure you post if you have any questions or worries ;)

Backing up what Crown says I did change my telephone number which was free, so that everything was in writing and maybe because I did this going on other peoples experience here my companies were fairly quick to give in and accept payments and reduce interest. If they can't get you on the phone they realise they can't pressure you as much in writing.

Can only echo Rayday and Crown. I'm doing my own and yes it is stressful to begin with but I was suprised how helpful some companies were and unsuprised how awful/inept (Lloyds TSB) others are.
I think I've managed to keep my local post office open on my own by sending everything registered post. Good luck for the future.

And I second and echo Leixlip Lloyds were appalling right hand does not even know left hand exists - but you do feel a huge sense of achievement beating them at there own game!
  • I can only second what everyone else has said really - it is difficult and stressful to begin with but once you've got the DMP set up and its running its stress free ... if you have a problem or a query you don't have to rely on a third party company to give you the answers as you are dealing with creditors direct.

I do think Rayday made a very good suggestion about changing your phone number as I was inundated with phone calls when I cancelled my DMP with Payplan to manage my own. I think the process would have run much smoother without having to bicker over the phone over a few pence!!

    Very good suggestion!

The problem as well with the phone calls is 'NO' is generally a word they do not understand and they will badger you, but stick by your guns and when they ask if you can afford anything else just stand by your original SOA - do not let them twist your arm, as if you do for one you have to for all!!

Good luck with it, if you've any probs give me a shout :D

If you are embarassed about family and friends wondering why you have changed your phone number just tell them you were getting weird calls, its nice to know only the people you want to hear from - ok bar family :p ring and you never have to worry about anyone picking the phone up.
