Many things are a bargain in Thailand
I think I used the Happy SIM last time I was there and it worked well. Others may be slightly cheaper but they removed the hassle of having to load extra credit onto them. The only problem with these tourist SIMs is that they do recycle numbers so you can get a lot of junk texts. Easily ignored though.
When travelling in SE Asia I tend to take an old phone with me so that if it is lost or damaged then it's not the end of the world.
Only 10 sleeps until my next visit.0 -

Are you joking? That's almost like saying that DCC removes the hassle of having to work out the exchange rate.
If you get a SIM at the desk, you can top it up at the same time and also select the package best for you....not for their sales figures.
The issue for me is that the data package lasts only for seven days. So you'll need to add another package after seven days, by topping up. What you don't want to happen is that when you top up is that they automatically deduct from your balance to add another 1.5GB for a week package.
Also, AIS for instance, try to lead you towards short validity packages of 7 to 15 days, in order to get you to have to reapply packages more often.
As an example, one of these packages might better suit the OP.
The Tourist packages are a simplified sales solution,0 -
There were stands with free sims when I was there at Christmastravelover0

"Fair bit" is a fairly useless description.
I use very little data on my Smartphone, no matter how I try. In addition, my speed requirements are low. So i can make use of speed limited packs. For instance a package limited to 0.5Mbps. 500 MB per day for a week for £1.20
Adequate for my needs.
Your description is woefully inadequate,You can get 12 GB of full speed mobile broadband for £16 if you want to splash out.
