Replacing double glazing

After a cold call from a company claiming there are government grants of up to £2000 for replacing any type of old windows - single or old double glazing, the salesman gave us a quote for the cost of replacing our old windows and told us we had to accept this price today to qualify for the government grant of 20% off. Tomorrow the price is 20% more and all other companies will not be able to offer us this discount from the government as the consumer has to accept the first and only available quote to qualify, has others experienced this and is it valid?

No. It is a sales ploy. No government grant would come with the stated condition.

You should always ask for the U and g values of the windows, otherwise you don't know the value of them. Double glazing is not a commodity (nor triple).

    1. Do you even want replacement windows?
If not, forget it. And get yourself signed up to the TPS.

    2. If you do want replacement windoes, remember this supplier called you in an attempt to sell their products. They've given you a prce, or you can work it out, based on you accepting the deal tomorrow (or probably in a few days time)
Go and get 2-3 more quotes from recommeded suppliers and see how their prices compare.

Then you will be able to make an informed decision :)

Btw, you say this grant it is valued up to £2000 and is calculated as 20% off. So to get £2k off, they will need to charge you at least £10k! Where do you live? Buck House or somewhere similar??? Our neighbour paid about £4k for replacement windows for their large 4 ded detached house earlier this year. (excluding front door)

from commission, as was shown Double glazing and other salesmen have been using the agree now and you'll get a discount ploy for years. Also, there is no government scheme as I told a taken aback salesman a couple of days ago.

I was approached by a window salesman, holding stall in Tesco, at the weekend and I took a leaflet intending to call a few local companies for quotes on replacement glass only, but I refused to give my details (saying I'd call at a time of my choosing ) and ignored the man's plea to mention his name when I called.

My son once worked in the production department of a double glazing company and a salesman told him that they have a fixed price for the product and anything the rep gets above that is his bonus. I have no intention of paying a bonus, so will make my own approach, preferably to a local company, which doesn't use a sales force.

Some of these reps make huge amounts , as was illustrated by the son of a lady I once knew. She told me how well he'd done (sales manager status), having a flash car (which I saw), his own house and buying her terraced but large home for her, too.
  • I put my own windows and doors in from scratch 4 years ago and I'm long gone 70. Changing a whole house replacement glass only should take no longer than a day. Trade prices are cheap there's a lot of competition for local manufacturers as tradesmen do and always will go to the cheapest decent maker. Look for a local with a good rep from people you have spoken to.
