Newbe reclaiming PPI and Mortgage Protection

Hello,
I have been putting this off for a while but it looks like I should be doing something about reclaiming some of the pointless policies I sleep-walked into.
1987: Took out endowment mortgage with 'Western Trust & Savings' as being Self-Employed, they were the only ones who would give me a mortgage. Included was mortgage protection with Eagle Star, recommended even though I stated I was Self-Employed. (Also promised huge bonuses which never materialized, but that's another story!)
Told by Western Trust lady I had to have their house insurance too.
2002: A credit card with 'Egg' included PPI, recommended by Egg on the phone having again stated I was Self Employed.
I also have had loans with Egg, Barclays and First Direct which included PPI.
It wasn't until I read the small print that I realised that being Self-Employed they wouldn't pay up, and from then I stopped taking it.
I think I have kept most of the paperwork.
How do I go about it? Some of these Banks no longer exist.
Thanks for your help. Steve

Self employment would have nothing to do with an Eagle Star policy. Also pre-regulation.
Quite normal in the 80s and allowed at the time.Told by Western Trust lady I had to have their house insurance too.How do I go about it?
No-one to complain to on the mortgage insurances. You seem to be mixing up other products with PPI (although most mortgage PPI plans also cover self employed. However, Eagle Star were a life assurance company and not a general insurance company)
As for Egg, you would complain to Canada Square Operations. Barclays and First Direct would be whom you complain to for them.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
