Hate the cold bathroom tiles - how to make the bathroom more welcoming.

Hi

I am looking to redo the bathroom. I hate the cold bathroom tiles but I want to tile everything in the new bathroom as I have a large family. (We will talk to the builder about different ideas and are currently looking into underfloor heating.)

On a hoilday to Germany, I noticed they have lovely tiles which dont make the bathroon feel cold and unwelcoming. Does anyone know the name of these type of tiles?

Please also leave posts about how you have made your bathroom more welcoming (without having the heating on 24/7).

Many Thanks

Fit a carpet is one solution. I know you want tiles but a carpeted bathroom will always feel warmer than a tiled bathroom.

Rugs are another but be careful of people, especially the young and old, slipping and sliding on them.
  • Lino that looks like tiles. We have just done our bathroom and were quite surprised at the choice of lino now.

have you considered electric underfloor heating?there are various types that can be laid directly under floor tiles.the price is very good considering most bathrooms are small and it is sold by the square metre.

add a timer and it will switch on whenever you set it,for example cold mornings.that will also keep you on top of costs

(this will give you an idea,if you search around its a lot cheaper,eg around £80/5 square metres)

Are you on about feeling cold as in the design, or physically being cold as in the temperature.

Personally for me, anything black or white is cold. Try using neutral colours, grey's, beige etc and the use some warm downlights:

    Rubber might be another option.

I'd avoid carpet like the plague - why anyone ever thought it was a good floor covering for bathrooms is beyond me.

    Why?

We have had normal carpets* in our bathrooms for decades and never had any problems.

It is warm and comfortable to walk on.

If it gets a bit wet, it dries out quickly.

*By normal carpets, I mean the same that you would install in living rooms, bedrooms etc. They are not specifically designed for bathrooms.

Mainly about keeping them clean. There are so many opportunities for messing up the floor in a bathroom: walking around with less-than-clean feet that just just got wet, toothpaste, stray shower sprays going everywhere, and the obvious potential for accidents around the toilet, especially if there are children around (not to mention that many men aren't all that good at aiming accurately).

If a hard waterproof floor gets dirty you just wipe or mop it clean. You can't do that with a carpet. When they get wet they superficially dry out, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if mould was slowly growing down there, especially if an area repeatedly gets wet.

I've lived in places with bathroom carpets and I wouldn't do it again.

We have carpet tiles, they're great. They've only been there just over 10 years so haven't really had a chance to get dirty yet.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Hello

Thanks for the replies. I find our tiles are very physically cold.

I love the picture of the grey bathroom, I think in our new bathroom we will stay clear of white, we have always had a white bathroom. In fact, I love the look of the grey bathroom so much, grey colours are at the top of the list.

We have a problem (long story) that may stop us from having underfloor heating however, I love the idea.

    Lino is lovely, excellent idea.

I have had carpet before in the bathroom (about 10 years ago), it fine for adults however, with a young family, it will always be getting wet - not too good for us.

Anyone who thinks carpet in a bathroom is a good idea, I dare you to go down and give it a sniff. Trust me, you'll want to switch to tiles immediately.
