Advice need stained wooden front door painted

I'm planning on having my front door painted and need some advice. It already has a stain on it. Does this need to come of before its painted?
Also what paint needs to be used? Someone mentioned that Leyland trade is a very good paint. Should I use Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss? Can it be mixed to the colour I want? Also whats the best primer to use?
It already has a brass looking letterbox but its quite old. Any recommendations of how to spruce it up?
Finally wheres the best place to buy good quality and inexpensive door knockers?
Sorry for all the questions. I want to get the paint and everything in beforehand.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
