Uncomfortable chairs - how to improve?

We have 6 really uncomfortable pine dining chairs (table is nice) which we can't afford to replace so - with visitors season approaching - I'm wondering if there's any way I can make them more comfortable. I have seat pads on them which help a little but it's the backs that are awful - a bit too low and the wood bit that goes across the top is too thin and sharp. (No - I didn't buy them; blame my OH who bought them second hand cos he thought they looked "stylish" and never bothered to sit on them). Has anyone ever managed to pad out similar chairs so that they look nice (rather than a mess)? I don't know where to start.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Could you make padded covers to go over them? You could try, with just a throw folded over and then put over the back of them.
A bit like this: http://www.bloglovin.com/blogs/elin-sine-draumesider-love-1412077?post=1863883743&blog=1412077&frame_type=b&viewer=true
- Okay this isn't the look I'd be aiming for, but think with a throw that fits in with your decor - try it with something you already have to see if it makes it more comfortable. Go down to the second picture, 7th nov 2013.0 -
Do you have a photo, might help with some suggestions0

I would just put a chair pad on the back to match the one on the seat.
I'm sure you can match them up. They have ties so that can help.
But a photo would help us here!0 -
hi, one of the ladies I do for puts an in expensive sheepskin rug on each of her spine backed dining room chairs, she has chosen white ones and I must say they look lovely!0

I have made pads, cut to size, and then put on a piece of elastic to hold in place.
Merrick & Day do lots of different size pads, but I have used padding from fabricuk.0 -

Oh as a ps sheepskin would look lovely but you'd probably need to think about a material that doesn't shed over people who sit on them0
