I started a blog back in 2009 and forgot about it. Last January £100 appeared in my bank and after looking found it was paid by Google Ireland. I have since picked it up again and get over 8million views per month. I am so proud of it. I have since been able to become self employed with my blog. I used Blogger and Google Adsense.

    8 million views a month ?
I think i've read that. Is it the one about flying pigs ?

Have you already started your blog? I have a blog but I have only just started on it really. I think you need to find something your passionate about and just go for it.
I add that to do not forget the original content that would distinguish you from others;)

It's there, I checked earlier. It says 'visit homepage'. I get 80,000 page views a month. I have hit the 100,000 but it fluctuates depending on the time of year.

Checked your blog out of pure curiosity and ended up spending half my night reading it and plan on reading more tomorrow. Well done excellent blog!
  • I'm really interested in starting a blog myself, but I wondered: Is it better to do a blog on a popular subject or a niche matter? The former is likely to bring in more readers...but them the latter is easier to stand out in...

The reason being, I wanted to start a blog on the subject of defence, probably with a technology leaning (or vice versa). Maybe it's my searching skills, but I cant find any on this subject really apart from newspaper run blogs. However, it's what I do for a living (so I know the subject very well) and also on LinkedIn, my contacts and I spend a lot of time sharing content and discussing it on there.

...but, it's not exactly wide audience!

I would think the most important thing is to do a blog on something you know about, and can write coherently about. It's down to you to make it interesting, and that will help to make it popular. Obviously there's only so much you can do with some subjects, but if it were me I'd start with the one you know the most about, then once you're used to blogging in general you might want to start another on something a little more mainstream.

Why thank you AJXX, that made me laugh. My page views have sky rocketed over the last couple of weeks since the articles about me have been splashed all over the media. Highest for one day was 18,000 page views, now it's leveling out to about 7 - 10 thousand a day. It has taken me eight years to get this far.

I would say anyone starting a blog with the intention of making money from it should be prepared to work on it every day, and to promote it at every opportunity, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, You Tube, Forums, etc. You must be passionate and knowledgeable about your subject, and you should let your personality shine through. Readers want to know about you the person, and you should write it as if you are talking directly to the individual. Magazines can be bought off the shelf at a shop, don't write magazine articles for your blog.

You need to build up your followers first, no point in splashing adverts all over it if no one is reading it. Interesting copy is crucial, and light hearted and chatty seems to work best. Your subject should be wide reaching, too narrow and it won't find the target audience. My blog is about having a good life on a pension, and covers every aspect of my life. If I only wrote about cooking or needlework I would very much shrink my audience.

I choose not to monetize my blog because to do so would be hypocritical of me. I have to stay true to my word of knowing the difference between a need and a want, and knowing when I have enough. For me it's not about making more money, it's about managing on what I already have. I often get asked if I accept sponsorship, product and services reviews, and guest posts, but I always say no.

If anyone wants to blog for money, it can be done as it has been proved, but be prepared for a lot of work over a long period of time. Good luck, give it a whirl, you don't know until you try.

Hello. If you click on my name, a drop down menu appears. Click on Ilona's homepage, that will take you there.

Yes, if you use Blogger you can write a weeks worth of posts, or more, in one go, and schedule them to publish one at a time, one each day if you like. Very handy.
