Does anyone know where I can get an Externally powered, USB, Optical (ie. DVD) Drive?

  • or use a cheaper non powered one , and a powered usb hub

I don't think that will work, in this case.

I'm wanting to connect the drive to my Hudl, and it has to through a micro USB/OTG adapter.

Unless you can get powered, micro USB/OTG adapters?

Plenty of external USB DVD/disk drives come with a Y cable that has two USB connectors. One of those is power and one is data(probably+power). Just put the power USB connector into a USB charger.

Actually I'd be inclined to just copy/rip the DVD content to a USB thumb drive.

    Bob,

are you expecting to use this as an external DVD player or using it for data purposes ?

If you want it for DVD playback then I'm not sure if there is anything that supports DVD menus and libdvdcss on android directly, you can via SD card and mount as ISO using VLC. Perhaps someone else might have the answer who has tried it.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
  • VLC Media Player plays DVDs, and I have VLC Media Player installed on my Hudl.

does the android version of VLC player actually play DVDs ? , have you tried this via a pendrive?

I was under the understanding that android could not read a DVD ?

and you should use something like handbrake to convert them to mp4 then play them

VLC on Android will play ISO files, which is the underlying DVD disk format.

Which is not quite the same thing as the OP is after!
  • and vob files? does it on android?

I think ebay may be your best bet. I have a mains powered optical drive that I bough years ago and keep as a back up, maybe somebody who did the same and has decided it's just taking up space will be selling it. You might even get one on Freecycle if you advertise.
