getting the right tax code

Hi my foster brother got a first job and i think he's on a temporary tax code?

He's desperate for money and i think i read there's a form he can have filled in that will give him a proper tax code rather then having him wait a year? Also how does he claim back the extra tax his paid until now.

I found the info couple weeks ago but then moved to uni and lost it. thx.

thanks, I found the PAYE; starter checklist which replaced the p46 form- but it says "use this form if you're an employer and need to record information about a new employee for PAYE."

So is it his employers responsibility? or can he fill this form in and take it into his employer himself? thanks.

The quickest way for him to get the right tax code may be for him to contact HMRC direct. This link may help - it has the phone number if he can call first thing when they open - or the Online Form to tell HMRC his tax code is wrong but this may take longer

His employer should have either asked him for a P45/P46 or got him to fill this form in when he first started. If they didn't he needs to speak to them about it.

As blondebubbles says, it would be helpful to know what the tax code is. At the moment it seems a bit vague as to whether he is actually on the wrong code....

It's not the wrong tax code per se but he is on a generic emergency tax code for when there's not enough information.

    Tax code 0T/ 1. :)
