Tax credits overpayment

My son moved out last October, at this time I told child benefit who told me they would inform tax creds they told me I would continue to me paid until December... at the end on November I got a letter from tax creds telling me they needed more information as someone else was claiming for my son (I filled the form in and attached copies of letters to n from child ben etc) payments continued until I again asked asked tax creds to look into it as I was still being paid at the end of December. I've now had a demand for £1600 for over payment due by November!
Firstly as I asked and asked again should I have to pay it as it was obviously not my fault ?
Can I ask to pay in installments? £1600 is over two months wages for me!
the really annoying thing is they have just made extra payments to me yesterday due to finalising my claim for the end of last year, it's nuts!

Yes you can pay in installments :-) give them a ring, they are realy reasonable and helpful I found after being in a similar situation ��
