You can set up auto-top up on it. You never get caught out then...
i'm surprised they 'got you' over 50p though - they usually use some discretion...April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200 -
I think they would be better off if they had a red and green light. They if would be much clearer if things failed.
They do, they are right next to the Oystrer reader. Red light will show the Oyster is not working, the amber is an OK Oyster and once you touch your card on the machine, it bleeps once and the amber light comes on.
Thr real problem people have is they think 2 bleeps means it valid. It doesn't, it means either you have no money on your card, or it read it in error. They just go and sit down. When the Inspectors get on, the row starts.
So for people that don't yet understand how Oyster works. If it bleeps twice, don't walk away, it will cost you at least £20 to travel. Just ask the driver what the reader say's.Please do not feed the Trolls!0 -
I hate bendy buses and trying to actually pay for your journey! Often you can't get anywhere near close enough to the reader, and have no idea due to noise if it beeped once or twice or if the light chaged to red... Annoys the hell outta me!
Why are there not readers on the ticket machines at the bus stop - they could do it like they do tickets - your swipe is valid for 1 hour (longer if you are a proven distance from the pay station you swiped at on a bus it serves) or similar...April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200 -

I've never not had money on my card so I didn't know it beeped twice (thought I had money on the card!! website hardly ever works!) plus trying to reach across a crowded bus means you can't see the dark display!
wouldn't mind but the bus wasn't that crowded that day and someone else did their card at the same time as me so I thought the second beep was theirs!! honest error. Plus about 8 people got on but only two beeps!!!! When the inspectors got on that lot just casually got off.. really obvious from the looks on their faces - I hadn't seen the inspectors and as I had paid (to my knowledge) then why would I care!
So if you want to cheat the system it's easy just walk or leg it.. .the inspectors don't go after someone even if they see them but if you make an error and honest then you're screwed!
It makes me want to have a free 'rides' to make up for it or out of principle but I'm not really like that.. I don't mind paying my way even if I'm skint and I would feel awful with other people who have paid and I havn't!
I wouldn't mind but I usually walk and only take the bus a couple of times a month (guess that's why I couldn't remember how much was on the card!) and only took the bus that day as I had a large package - Hour & half walk! I was so annoyed that I got off the bus.. 3 stops for £20! not a bargain! :rolleyes:Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later datenow at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -
Do I live in a London in a parallel universe to some people in this thread? I've never had a problem with Oyster and I've had one since the beginning. When I've had a Travelcard on there and gone outside my zones I've always been charged correctly, it's always capped correctly and is generally convenient.
When I've got on a bus and not had enough credit the bus driver's ticket machine has shown a red light rather than green and beeped twice, and when I've not really been paying attention the driver has called me back.
The bus I catch to and from work tends to run a reliable, frequent service using buses which are clean inside and out and no visible graffiti or other vandalism. Some of the buses even have leather seats!
My weekly commuting costs are never more than £10, soon to go down to £9 when the Oyster bus fare drops to 90p later this month.
The easiest way to avoid accidental fare dodging is to phone up and get auto top-up set up on your card, so when your balance drops below a certain amount it is automatically topped up.0 -

By what you said there it's obvious you don't use our buses :rotfl:Please do not feed the Trolls!0 -
Well, clean apart from the grease some people seem to put in their hair and then rub all over the windows. Yuck!0
