weird calls - BT land line

This has now happened twice - I answer a call and after a few seconds silence it rings like I am calling someone. Can anyone tell me what's going on? I then try to hang up but the line seems to be blocked for ages. To my knowledge nobody can reverse a call without asking first but this is weird. Might be innocent enough but a friend had a story from hell to tell recently where her land line was redirected by fraudsters...

This may be a callcentre with automated dialling, where you have picked up but there is no-one free in the callcentre to handle the call.

Automated diallers call more people than there are agents because many of the calls they initiate will go unanswered.

OFCOM barred Contact Centres from initiating calls and leaving the recipient in silence, so they now send ringing (in the hope you'll hang on and an agent will speak to you).

I keep getting my ansaphone filled with Chopin's piano Waltz (the theme tune from Radio 4's Just a Minute) -I presume that is another call centre's way round the issue !

Many thanks, folks. Glad it's nothing more sinister on my line.
I'm doing the same to cold callers now (ask them to hold and put something nice on Spotify on for them to enjoy) ;) .
