Vanity Basin or Inset Basin ?

We moved into our house two years ago and noticed there was a crack in the bathroom basin which was a Lecico Victoriana range.

We want to replace the basin but are finding it really difficult to get the right size and shape to fit into the vanity unit which is rounded at the front corners. I went into a Bathroom showroom and they said as the basin was discontinued our only alternative was to change the whole thing for a freestanding pedestal because the size is difficult to fit (540w x 440depth), but to do this we would need to retile the whole bathroom because we don't have spare tiles to replace behind where the vanity unit comes out and in any case we wanted to keep the vanity unit if possible.

Looking online there are inset basins but I was told by the showroom that these have to go onto a worktop ???? Why when we have the vanity unit to stand it in?

Anyone got any advise what they did when changing their basin top?
