O/S Daily Friday 2nd October 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning everyone

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.

Now getting light, looks to be dry underfoot, so hoping for a dry day – as I want to continue with the washing and getting it line dried.

DH up and gone to work stupid early. DS1 now getting ready for work. DS2 still in his pit but I’ll wake him shortly so he can get ready for school.

Dinner last night was spag bol, and very nice it was too, it’s definitely a dish that benefits from a long slow cook – the bol. Sauce has so much more depth of flavour that way. Tonight’s dinner will be something that I organise whilst in the SM this morning. It’s likely to be something with chips though, I would like a nice easy dinner as it’s Friday night and I’m working tomorrow morning and I’m still working through the ongoing list of chores – it doesn’t seem to be getting less, but it’s my aim to use it to keep focused. Yesterday I did get the washing, drying and ironing done, although I think there’s enough for another load which I’ll put in the WM shortly. I did get housework done, although not a deep clean anywhere but enough to make it look presentable for the moment.

This morning I want to go to the SM really early for when they open, I’m going to try MrA’dees, went late last Friday morning and it was completely rammed – I had to search for a parking space – so hoping going early will mean it’s not so bad. Last week I didn’t mind as I only went to look as had done main shop elsewhere and didn’t want to buy very much but I’m aiming to do the main shop there today. I will visit the bank in town when I’m there on Monday or I may get chance to go tomorrow when I finish work I we get finished on time as we’re supposed to finish at 12 noon and the bank doesn’t close until 12.30pm. It would just mean I don’t use all my lunch break on Monday standing in the bank!

We have a reasonably busy weekend, I’m working Saturday morning, DH is going to paint my en suite bathroom ceiling whilst I’m at work – it’s tiny so shouldn’t take too long. On Sunday we have the first of the caravan meetings to attend so we’ll be leaving late morning, and we are picking up some friends on the way, we’re going to stop off for something to eat on the way so we can have a catch up with them.

Have good Fridays’ everyone x

Keep safe and well x

Good morning everyone wide eyed and bushy tailed this morning :):):)
so I have a yen to turn out the kitchen cupboards and see whats lurking at the back.

I am trying to reduce the size of my stocks to make room for Christmas stuff that hopefully will be reduced in January.
I should really be doing a big shop for October but I am putting it off for a day or two until I can use up some of what I have in store ATM.

I am looking for a recipe that's quick and easy to do in the microwave for one portion of rice.I have never been very good at making rice as I always seem to make too much and its a waste .So I need to be able to make just one smallish portion just for me. I do seem to have accumulated quite a store of the stuff Even those pouches are too much for just me.My DD gave me a couple of bags of rice as she said 'Oh you'll be sure to use it up you never chuck things out'She had been given several flavours that she didn't use in her online order and couldn't be bothered to argue with the driver.(she's the well-off DD not the hard up one :):):))
My two DDs are total opposites in outlook at times. The youngest one although flat broke most of the time never wastes anything .I have given her a couple of bags to use up but I still have several in the cupboard. So if anyone is around who can tell me a good quick easy method of microwaveing a small amount I would be very pleased then I can use it up and make some more space :):):)
Hope you all have a good day I had a decent haul of free blackberries yesterday which have been soaked in salt to make sure there is no unwelcome visitors and patted dry and in a box in the freezer.I know I have a large bag of apples coming my way from DD's in-laws at the weekend so I will be peeling and slicing for an hour of two for the freezer
Onwards and upwards chums time to make room for winter stocks now :):):)

    Morning All

Still dark out there, but dry so far. Not sure I have enough washing for a load today. DW emptied - not using it so much now DD has left.

Jackie - If I use a pouch of rice I take half out and heat it in the microwave in a dish then use the rest over the next couple of days, it doesn't have to be in the pouch.

tru - hope your bathroom is up and running.

Had a morning of training at work yesterday which was very intense but very useful. This is all for a job that isn't mine! I am standing in at the Office which is a job I love, maybe if the vacancy is advertised I can apply for it and manage to speak at the interview - the last one was a complete disaster!

I have a friend coming for tea later, I've made veggie meatballs and will do some spaghetti later so that will be quick and easy. Looking forward to seeing her and showing her my efforts in the house!

Hope everyone's ok and has a good Friday. Take care. XX

    Morning everyone.

JackieO - great news from yesterday. Congratulations.

The fog never lifted here yesterday, it receded slightly but the sea remained hidden as did Jura. It was like they didn't exist. The fog meant that the day wasn't warm and things were slightly damp.

The electrician called off yesterday and is coming today instead, at least he let me know. Out of the blue a meter reader turned up, first time since we got this house in November 2013. Think my complaint to the supply company is filtering through.

It's still dark grey outside so I can't tell how it maybe later.

TA - I'll be thinking about you and Mr TA today and hope all goes well for him.

    Happy Friday everyone.
  • Morning one and all. Just a quick in and out from me this morning.

We need to be ready for the taxi by 9.30 as the train is 10.00 and can't miss it. Just a change of train in Leeds and then we are away. We are due in Liverpool at lunchtime. The hotel is just round the corner but we will be too early for check in so will leave our little case with them and get a taxi straight up to the hospital. That will give us plenty of time to relax with a coffee and sandwich before the scan appointment. Par for the course with me, I am feeling all churned up and will be glad to get back to the hotel and relax when this afternoon is over. I am just so glad we are not doing the return journey the same day.

Have a good day all (((((HUGS))))) if needed and take care xx

    Good morning everyone :hello:

JackieO, I don't know if this will help but I often cook a whole bag of rice (mainly brown as I am the only one who likes it) and freeze it in individual portions. As long as the rice is cooled quickly after cooking there should be no problem. I either reheat from frozen or try to remember to take it out to defrost when I need some.

My hubby is home today so I am being very well looked after. My brain to mouth filter isn't working very well so I am being very cautious as to what I say/post. I may have upset my niece on her birthday yesterday by saying something inappropriate, I apologised but I am beating myself up about it now.

I will sign off for now, hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx
  • Good Morning everyone, a lovely day here after a misty start He Who Knows has gone off fishing early bless him and I'm heading to town on the bus for some grocery shopping when my bus pass is legal after 9.30. We had such a lovely day yesterday, we visited the Hawk Conservancy at Weyhill near Andover and enjoyed every second of it, so lovely to spend a whole day out in the warmth and fresh air watching beautiful birds fly their displays. Came home and walked Cookie then watched the rugby but fell asleep at 9.30ish and got sent to bed by OH! Feel better for a solid nights sleep though, something that doesn't happen often these days.

TA thinking of you both and we'll be there with you while it's all happening, hope the hotel is nice and comfy and quiet and that you have a little haven to go back to after the hospital visit, look after yourselves.

Have another nice day all, enjoy this last few days of sun and have it in store for 'real' autumn which would appear to be on its way next week, Lyn xxx.

    ìHola!
Yes I'm here again, at least life seems to calm a few paces out here.

LW Please to see you had a nice holiday, but not that your Lupus was playing up. Enjoy the waggytails.

Jackie-0 So pleased to read your news. You must be walking on air.

tru Hope your bathroom is up and running. How is Scampi on the lead now?

nmic Good luck with BT. I had similar problems, I'm with TT and after several phone calls managed to get a Manager as eventually realised I knew what I was talking about, one Sunday afternoon. They had given me a speedtest to run, which sent them the readings, and while I was talking to him, it started to do the loss of signal, slow, OK session, and I just kept running and sending it, and he was watching it as his end, so could see it happening. They did improve it, but tbh the best thing I did was to go onto fibre. One of the engineers they sent out without charge said there was some interference between the box and the house, but finding it was never easy. No one looks after their own lines now, Openreach control those, and they charge them for coming out, hence they want to pass charges on. You do have to be a bit of a nuisance though!;):D

snoozer So pleased the wedding went off a dream. Lovely memories for all of you.:beer::T:T

Camelot Hope your bruises and pride and improving.

    TA Fingers crossed for today.

Can I ask for some positive vibes for DS&DDIL. the people who had placed an offer on their flat pulled out after 9 weeks :mad::mad:, so it had to go back on the market, they have two second viewing this weekend, and unless they get a good offer out of them, they will lose the house they are after.:eek:

Skye was groomed yesterday, so she is looking quite sleek now, and cooler for the warmer weather. It will grow again before we come back, but not quite as long, we weighed the fur cut off and it weighed .78 kilo.

Not sure if I mentioned it, but I have had to come off my anti-inflamatories. I have been suffering "silent reflux", which made me cough almost constantly, in the end I knew that the a-i's were not good for tummies, so tried it myself, and he coughing eased, so talked with the Dr and I agreed to come off. Rather stiff, but the weather out here is helping. I have virtually stopped coughing now. Trouble is I thought my good knee, was my left knee, but now I know they have swopped!!

((((hugs)))), spoons, and positive vibes all round, and a big lick from Skye for those who prefer it. Take care everyone. DG

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Good morning everyone.
JackieO pleased to hear your good news.
    TA thinking about you today.

A bright start here today so washing about to go out. I had a niggly headache yesterday that wouldn't go away so just had a steady day yesterday. Feel much better today so will push on and get as much as I can done before the weekend. The car goes in for its MOT today so hopefully it will pass. I haer the good weather isn't here for much longer so I will try to get out into the garden and cut back some of the plants in the borders and fill the council composting bin which is due to be collected on Monday.

Hope everyone has a good day x

    Morning all.

I'm still in bed and in no rush to get up either. Had a miserable day yesterday. There was no pleasing my Grandson and I had words with my youngest daughter over Christmas. I went to say...

"I need your advice as what to get a little girl for Christmas. Dad wants to buy her something to wear but her parents dress her as a bit of a rocker...Doc Martin's an' all".

I only got as far as Christmas and I got me head bitten off. Apparently she refuses to talk to me about Christmas as I over dramatise it all. Let me explain.

Christmas day they spend with his family and in the pub. We are allotted an hour between 10 and 11. Last year I made a point in saying that me and Dad felt a bit surplus to requirements or second best to the pub. Hubby swore blind this year we were spending this Christmas in the caravan though I refused because it would mean leaving Youngest on his own on Christmas and he refuses to come with us.

So today I'm refusing to get out of bed until I want to. The fact I was up most of the night with the other dog who needed to spend more time outside than inside has a lot to do with it.

News from the Baby House in SA. My daughter and her partner have taken in a 7 year old boy. He's been in foster care over there since he was 3 months old but there's something gone wrong with his court order and the social worker was less than helpful so the girls have took him on. The social worker they deal with is hoping to get an adoption in place within a 6 month time scale.

    Onwards and forwards

    Have a great day all.
