P-bath shower screen leak

Hi all-
I have moved into a new property which has a P-shaped bath with a shower in it. The first time I used it I was interrupted halfway through by my wife yelling from downstairs there was water dripping through the ceiling! Sure enough there was - the water makes it's way through what I'm sure is a typical spot; the gap between where the seal starts and the pivoting hinge on the shower screen.
I'm just hoping for some input from other people who have had a similar problem. The thing is, we had the same issue with our shower in our previous property but left before we got a chance to fix it properly; we were told by a plumber that it's a common issue with p-shaped baths. But I don't understand that, as the issue has to do with the fact that there is a gap in the hinge and no matter what you do, there always will be if you want it to pivot. I can look at fixing the screen or getting a fixed screen, but then it's very hard to reach around and turn on the taps, and to clean it.
My other thought is at what point is the issue the floor? I have also read that shower screen leaks happen to every shower and that the floor should be tanked. But is that putting the cart before the horse?
I realise that's a lot of questions but some input would be VERY much appreciated!!
