It's a good thing, it encourages people to bring their own bag and saves the planet.

I always bring my own backpack.. carrying shopping on your bag is so much easier than in your hands !

I don't buy many items at a time, so use the self scan tills. I asked a member of staff in Morrisons, yesterday, how they will deal with the carrier bag issue from Monday and she said she hadn't a clue. The staff hadn't been told anything and knew no more than what was on the notices posted around.
  • Hi,

at the self scan, the machine will ask how many bags used, relies on customer honesty, but the assistant is usually hovering about watching, would you get a name for stealing a 5p carrier bag?

    Hi,

5p is not a large amount of money but I do believe we the British public are being conned. If its not a huge charge let the shops pay it! The charge is for plastic bags....well why not give us paper bags, Primark will they be charging?

I sort of see the logic of charging for bags for food after all its single use like the bags but I don't fancy bringing home my £50 jumper or white shirt from Marks & Sparks, in a bag that's had last weeks potatoes in with all the mud. The thing thats get me is I will have to buy a bag and I will

be advertising the company all around town that I bought my garment from, I know that's the extreme end but I hope you get my point. Food yes clothes no! On the other side of things impulse buying will go out the window. 5p not a lot but its the principle of the matter for me.

Perhaps I will try on my proposed clothes purchase in the shop, order on line and have it delivered to store, it comes ready wrapped!!!

As for those who have their food delivered let the driver take longer to bring it in and take your time unloading it, means it will cost the store more as they will be doing fewer deliveries each day.

But if you are buying an expensive item of clothing, it's worth paying 5p for a decent bag. Talking 0.1%

I see and serve customers that buy The Sun newspaper and some want a carrier bag for this.
If they want one from tomorrow, it increases their cost by 12.5%.

The latter is an example where the govt wants a serious reduction in number of carriers issued

  • Hi,

I think when bags were free, folks would take one for a single item, stock up with them, then use them for bin liners.

There will be folks doing that today, and grabbing handfuls to 'stock' up.

I was in Asda last night and all the self serve checkouts had no bags bar one bundle that was getting passed amongst the tills, but they were those useless tiny bags. I walked away with my shopping in 6 of those that would have just taken 2 of the normal size bags. People were complaining all over.

This sort of thing !!!!es me off and gives me even more reason not to shop at the big four. The law doesn't start until Monday, so why do they see the need to force it upon everyone before then. If I had known they had taken all the bags away I would have come with my own bags. Just a dirty underhand way to get people to buy bags for life even before the law comes in.

^ I've been in Asda in the past and they had run out of bags. Maybe they had run out due to customers taking free bags full of free bags.
  • This works in Wales and N Ireland and Scotland

Wake up - use a hessian bag or two. Cannot see the problem except that ppl do not think ahead/are totally selfish
  • Hi,

they'll need the bags for all the discarded rugby shirts that'll not be needed now. :rotfl:

Paper bags are bad (even worse that plastic) for the environment in terms of gases produced in production and decomposition.

I haven't seen a single online grocery retailer who isn't offering a "with bags" option at 25-40p flat rate per delivery. I feel this is more than fair.

I broadly support the charge but like others will now have to buy bin liners. While I expect these will be way cheaper than 5p each I don't think my environmental impact will go down.

I know many abuse the free plastic bags and welcome the charge, but many like me already do a mix of own bags/trolley and re-use the free ones as bin liners.
