My laptop suddenly crashed last night for no apparent reason. HP Compaq Presario CQ71, Vista Home.

I could get to safemode and checked all drivers, ran repairs, sfc, diagnostics on hdd, memory etc and the only thing that worked was 'last known good configaration'. It appears to be fine now and am running MBAM scan and later an Avast scan. But it would be good to know what caused it in the first place.

  • I can't be sure for the reason of the crash, but in general, having worked with computers for a few decades - I'm going to recommend that you don't give it another thought unless it happens again.

I've yet to own or hear anyone owning a computer of any sort, that didn't crash at one point or another for seemingly no reason.

It's probably some software updates, drivers and such messing things up. Causing corrupted files, registry issues and simply getting the OS tangled up.

A restart fixes most such issues and if you bother to clean your computer of junk files regularly, you can minimize such problems in the future.

I'm thinking that your OS is simply getting too old and possibly developing some compatibility issues with some newer softwares and their updates. Just a guess.

Might want to consider updating to a newer Windows. I don't think Windows 10 is quite finished yet in terms of bug fixes and such, so I'd go for Windows 8.1 myself. But either is probably better than Vista.

My own PC crashes about once a month for no reason that I can identify and I've stopped even trying to figure it out. It's not really an issue, as all files are backed automatically anyway, so I only lose about 60 seconds all in all, as the OS is on an SSD and reloads into Windows almost instantly.

Could be many reasons, how did it crash ?

A blue screen or just froze ?
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
  • It went to blue screen, then a page of white error report which only appeared for a few secs then Vista repair which didn't work. I ran MBAM and it found about a dozen nasties. The machine seems fine now. Thanks for replies.
