Retreiving files from old hard drive?

My laptop has upped and died, first the screen went a bit dark and now it won't power up at all. It won't be economically feasable to repair it, might as well buy a new one, but I'd like to get things like old essays, music files etc from the hard drive. Can I get a lead from somewhere that will run from my hard drive to my desktop and allow my to transfer files over?

I got an kit from my local computer supplier that allowed me to use my laptop's hard drive as an external hdd. It cost around £15 if I recall correctly. I as able to get all my files back as well.0
