Can't stop beating myself up

  • Please don't beat yourself up. We are all here for the same reasons. We are all in debt and that should show you that you are not alone and so stop being unkind to yourself and move on xxx
  • I know it's really hard, because the human mind is extremely powerful and self destructive, but when you have these feelings, try to acknowledge them and then move on to think of the positives. Think of positive changes you've made, think of the progress so far, think how proud you'll be in 3 months time when you've stuck to it and started to see the numbers moving in the right direction.

We're all really good at beating ourselves up, but not so good at patting ourselves on the back when we've done something positive. A really good thing to do is write yourself a list of positive achievements, no matter how small and when you're feeling rubbish, get your list out and read through it.

Good luck on your journey xx

I think most people on here can relate to this and I think there are probably different phases that you go through on the debt free journey. Its horrible to realise that you cant actually afford the lifestyle that you have and its scary to think about living without credit.

Its true when people say that debt is very easy to get into but very hard to get out of. I was angry with myself for a long time. I think another thing that often happens is that you start to look for a quick fix as the thought of having to cut back for years is daunting. The truth is that there isnt a magic solution but if you stick at it and keep a close eye on your finances gradually it gets easier.

I am probably about 4 or 5 years down the road from you. We still have some debts to clear but the biggest thing is that I have learned to live within my means and actually realised that not having a lot of money isnt the end of the world.

Its not easy, you will probably fall off the wagon once or twice but believe me I was a financial disaster and if I can do it anyone can!

    Debt-free and Proud!
Lots of good advice offered - as usual - from people in your position, from those near the end of their journey and from those who are debt free. You have so much to be proud of! You've had your LBM, you've got a plan and you've got the support of others. You can improve your financial situation and still enjoy life! Your children won't look back on their early years and think they were hard done by. Once you're over this phase (which is a natural response), your creativity and determination will kick in. I wouldn't wish to be in this situation again but I love my spreadsheets, these boards, reading money-saving books and blogs, seeing savings go up and debts go down and bagging a bargain.

Your life is now changing for the better - and you will be an excellent role-model for your children! :)
