Hi, a friend's C: partition has broke (chkdsk cannot complete); he has no recovery/factory image BUT the RECOVERY partition (19GB) looks ok.
Is there an easy(ish) way to copy this partition to a new drive and run a factory install from it? (HP want £40 for a recovery "kit").
PlanB. I have been able to make a copy of the c:\SWSetup folder. I guess this includes HP drivers et al. Could I reinstall with a generic Win7Home ISO? Thanks.

You could try cloning the recovery partition to the new drive and making it bootable using an Ubuntu live CD. Use (dd) it works well.
Just make sure you copy the exact partition table and MBR (Master Boot Record) first to the new drive.
Run the recovery software as if you were using the original drive.
Plan B: would work if windows serial number sticker is for windows 7 home0 -
Have sent you the reinstallation disc. Only suitable for machines originally supplied with Windows 7 installed.0

Windows Update isn't working (after W7SP1 install; its running one of the CPUs at 100%). Had this a few months but cannot remember how I fixed it. Tried the various MS "fixes". Anybody solved this recently?

Are you writing of the same machine? How can it have been happening for a few months if you have jut run a clean install? Have you installed any software other than Windows 7 itself? Did you install from boot, formatting the drive?0 -

I installed from boot. Didn't format the drive (deleted existing partitions under Advanced Settings). Does Windows Update take a while to kick in?
The only other software I installed was an Ethernet driver. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -

The "Windows Update" page just sits at "Checking for updates" And fan is going mad (wu service is 100% on one of the CPUs; its an AMD which doesn't help; fan outlet is too hot to touch;)
This is my second install (first with "your" OEM W7SP1, second with Generic W7SP1 with key entry to activate).
EDIT: It started working (download and install updates). I will next try "download only and I'll chose when to install".
Not sure what triggered this to work. (barmy suggestion on HP boards) I did uninstall the AMD GPU driver and use AMD clean. After that I reinstalled the same driver AND did some offline updates (using wsusoffline). Not sure what kicked the updates into life. Thanks anyway for your time.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -

I recently went through the same, including all the copy/paste solutions posted by 'experts' on other forums.
I posted my solution on another thread a few weeks back. I downloaded and installed standalone IE11, this then kick started the avalanche of updates.
