Car tax due, but away from home without V11

Hello everyone

I'm away from home, with the car, and car tax expires today. I've forgotten to bring the reminder with me, and don't have the V5 either, so I'm without the magic 11 digit code that I'd forgotten I need to do all this online.

I've tried phoning, but that's an automated system that still needs the magic code.

There's no-one at home, so no-one can read the code to me.

I can't see if there's a period of grace (I'm home on Friday (2 Oct) so can do it then with the reminder, unless there's a way in the meantime?

Thanks for any help - I can't find any on the gov.uk website or a relevant thread here.

There isn't a period of grace, it's either taxed or it isn't.

However the chances of you getting stopped I would think are very slim and providing you tax it as soon as you get back on Friday then I wouldn't think you will have any problems.

  • Many thanks - it seems crazy that there's no way to get the code number (it's an automated phone service, not a real person) , when I'm trying to sort it out. I have my government gateway log in, but there's no big database that joins it all up yet! Changing my driving licence when I moved house needed my passport number, but I was at home when I did all that.

I'm going to save the code number on my phone or 'puter as soon as I get back!

I do realise it's my own poor admin that means I've only sat down to renew the tax today.

  • Oo - I kept looking on the gov.uk website and found another contact number for DVLA that's open 8am to 7pm - having gone through the automated options to say it was about a vehicle,, and car tax, and that I was unable to tax the car I was put through to a lovely lady called Emily who let me pay over the phone 'just this once' with my debit card, within a couple of minutes.

    The phone number is 0300 790 6802.

Well done, DVLA, great service - please put some information about this on your car tax bit of the gov.uk website :-)
