Can I buy trade emulsion paint myself, or do I need to get this via a painter and decorator? Can I get this in colours other than white (I'm thinking of off-white, such as cream or ivory).
What do you think of water-based gloss paints (white)? Any recommendations on good brands?

I use Brewers for my paint supplies. You can negotiate a discount or open a trade account if it's going worth your while.

Any one can buy trade paints. They are available in as many colours as you could think of. Crown do around at least 2000 colours as do Dulux.
Water based gloss is terrible. It covers poorly and is not very robust at all. try satin wood if you want an oil based profuct that will stay white.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Screwfix branches stock Leyland Trade in 11 colours - most of which are shades of white.
Your local decorators merchants will be happy to take your business as a cash customer - they will not be worried that you are not a trade customer. Here you will have a wider range of colours. Try a search on Leyland, or Johnstone or PPG in your area as examples. Dulux and Crown also have trade outlets.0
