Storing Fruit and Veg

I'm sure fruit and veg go off far more quickly these days and I wonder if it's more than just the fact that they are pre-washed? I saw a TV programme a while ago where huge amounts of apples were stored for ages at a particular temperature and wonder if this is the same for other fruit & veg? If so, once it is stored by the shopper in their homes would it start to deteriorate at an accelerated rate?

Be careful where you put bananas. They give off ethylene gas which encourages some other fruits to ripen. I believe apples and pears do the same and are often deliberately put with green tomatoes to encourage them to turn red.

Also, never store onions and potatoes together as the onions will make the potatoes sprout.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that washing all fruit and salad items in a vinegar/water bath, cleans them thoroughly and helps them to last longer. Has anyone tried this?
