Potatoes keep very well in brown paper bag in a cool place.

I never put tomatoes in the fridge, they go in a fruit bowl on the kitchen table.

  • you can get a potato bag from poundland. from october i get my veg from the farmers market and almost of it is dirty and i keep it on bench in greenhouse. i do this all winter long. never put tomatoes on fridge as they loose taste
  • Potatoes, onions and garlic are kept in the garage or a coolish kitchen cupboard in large paper bags with the tops open.

Bananas must be kept away from every other fruit as it makes every ripen too quickly, though handy if you need an avocado etc to ripen quickly, just stick in a paper bag together!

Tomatoes on the kitchen side as taste is ruined by refrigerating.

Most other veg and salad kept in paper bags in the fridge.

As preference I keep citrus fruits on the side as we prefer them at room temperature.

Berries, washed and thoroughly dried then kept between sheets of tissue paper in sealed tupperware.. lasts loads longer (tip courtesy of Nom Nom Paleo podcast)

I'm not quite as organised as the people above :D

Potatoes, onions and vegetables are bought with dirt still on (as someone put it). Plastic bags are torn open, but I don't remove the actual bag. Storage is in a deep drawer in the kitchen.

Salad stuff goes in salad drawer in fridge.

Fruit goes in fruit bowl on kitchen worktop. Bananas are separated at the top and placed around edge of bowl, I find this helps to keep them longer.

I have a separate fridge that I use for fruit and veg which is at a higher temperature than my regular fridge. I keep bananas in there in a plastic bag and use as required and never have any problem with them. Tomatoes are put in an airtight Tupperware bowl and keep for weeks. Cut melon is kept in the cooler fridge in a sealed Tupperware bowl and keeps well for over a week.

Don't have vast amounts to store as tend to buy just what's needed for planned meals for the week but everything is taken out of any plastic bags then pots, onions and squash go in a wicker basket in the cupboard under the stairs, next to outside wall so stays cool.
All other veg go in salad drawer, loose on kitchen roll, salad emptied out of bags and into new, this cuts down on moisture so last longer. Soft fruit in bowls in fridge, toms in bowl on side as I too don't like eating them cold, other fruit in fruit bowl, bananas in separate one.

I use clean newspaper in the bottom of the veg drawer, rather than paper towel that would cost money ...

I live in a house share, so only buy for me - I also bought my own fridge as I take up too much room in the fridge otherwise.

I tend to bung everything, except bananas in the fridge! I don't buy much veg at once and I'm really bad at not using things before they go off!

Would you say peppers need to be freed from their plastic bags?

For potatoes/carrots/sweet potatoes/onions - I nearly always buy loose as the bags are too large for me to get through before they go off. So they go straight into the salad drawer.

Fruit usually ends up on the fridge shelf in the punnets they came in, or on top of the fridge if its bananas or sometimes satsumas/apples as well.
