Conveyancing fees...what is reasonable?

We are in the process of selling our house and looking to buy another one. I received the following quote from a legal firm (attached to the estate agent selling our house) for both the sale and the purchase and would like to know if it is reasonable quote:

For the sale:

Lawyer's Fees:
Legal fee £550.00
Mortgage fee £35.00

Additional Costs:
Official Copies (up to) £28.00
VAT £122.60
Total £735.60

For the Purchase:

Lawyer's Fees:
Legal fee £700.00
Mortgage fee £55.00
Stamp Duty Land Tax fee £55.00

Additional Costs:
Search Pack £265.00
Land Registry fee £270.00
Land Registry Searches £20.00

VAT on Lawyer's Fees and
Searches £219.00

Total £1584.00

-for each party there will be a money laundering ID verification fee of £12.50 + VAT

-The Lawyer's fees for each sum sent electronically are £35.00 plus VAT

-A charge of £58.00 + VAT will be made at completion to cover the cost of maintaining an archive of documents associated with your cases. No further charge will be made should you require
us to retrieve these documents at a later date.

What are the sale and purchase prices? Most solicitors charge varying fees depending on the purchase price.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
  • I've just bought and sold and the fees were £1400.00 give or take a few quid.

1000-1500 is about right I'd say. Conveyancing warehouses can do it more cheaply but you're getting a inferior service normally as they just churn as many out as possible.

    For the sale:

    Lawyer's Fees:
    Legal fee £550.00 - ok
Mortgage fee £35.00 - should be included in legal fee

    Additional Costs:
Official Copies (up to) £28.00 - overpriced
    VAT £122.60
    Total £735.60

    For the Purchase:

    Lawyer's Fees:
Legal fee £700.00 -same as above
Mortgage fee £55.00 --same as above
Stamp Duty Land Tax fee £55.00 -should be included in legal fee

    Additional Costs:
Search Pack £265.00 - why a pack? Only legal requirement is a local land search
    Land Registry fee £270.00
    Land Registry Searches £20.00 -overpriced

    VAT on Lawyer's Fees and
    Searches £219.00

    Total £1584.00

-for each party there will be a money laundering ID verification fee of £12.50 + VAT -if you provide your own id and they take copies then this should be included in the legal fees

-The Lawyer's fees for each sum sent electronically are £35.00 plus VAT

-A charge of £58.00 + VAT will be made at completion to cover the cost of maintaining an archive of documents associated with your cases. No further charge will be made should you require
us to retrieve these documents at a later date - should be included in legal fees. I can't actually believe they are trying to charge extra for this!
    .

OP, with a firm like this trying to charge extra for standard work I'd be very careful about reading their t&c's. No doubt they charge for exchanging and completing in 3 weeks and toilet breaks!

Has any one used Withyking solicitors recently and what do you think of them? They have been recommended by a friend

Used them 5 years ago when I bought my shared ownership flat, as the housing association had negotiated a discount with them. They were fine. Got a quote for my current sale/purchase and they were quite expensive so went elsewhere.
