Add barcodes to a product ... financial question :-)

Does anyone sell to a retail shop and therefore add barcodes to your products? Have you registered (and paid) for a GS1 company prefix for yourself/your company ,....... or do come under the umbrella of the retail shop's barcode registration (or some other similar situation!). ......... help!
I have recently (last week) starting selling baby gift baskets and nappy cakes to a shop based in a hospital (just at entrance to maternity unit!). If successful, it could be rolled out to a few other of their shops. I can see why they want a barcode on the product but I've researched and found its £109 registration fee and then £119 annually to license/use a unique company barcode ...... which would be okay, if i was selling 100's .......

If they require a bar code to scan, bit it's going to be aa courage industry, maybe discuss with them using an agreed code for another product they'll never sell (eg a can of cheap lager or curried bakedbeans) and as long as you're not selling any big quantities to supermarkets etc. but to one shop, you can probably get away with it pretty easily. But check if they really do need a barcode first! They must have some kind of manual override if they have a fancy scanning till system.0

They do have an override because they've already sold several of the baskets (exciting!) and they just entered it into the till manually ..........
Get the impression they've not thought about all aspects of using a small supplier - the invoicing dept called me yesterday and said as i wasn't setup on the system yet for BACS payment , and it was such a small payment (£156 isnt small to me!) maybe the area manager could just pay me with her credit card ..........ummmm i cant take card payments ......=====================================
