Since the Greek ferry sinking a few years ago you cannot board a ferry now without a ticket. Sometimes this is not a problem if you are leaving during the day and can buy one at the port but if leaving early morning or late evening this could be a problem. also not all ferries travel every day so whilst turning up and winging it sounds great in practice it may not work out.

When we did this trip we bought a cheap package to Crete and then got the ferry from Crete to Santorini and then did a round trip to Athens and then an overnight ferry from Athens to Crete. We stayed at the pre booked accommodation for 2/3 nights

We also found that in this part of the Cyclades there are people who meet ferries and offer accommodation. Many of them have photos and we had some great places to stay without pre booking.

I have always found that if you really come unstuck the best hotel on the island will have rooms, that's what your credit card is for!

    Cool, sounds good.

To be fair accommodation isn't an issue as we have lovely hotels booked for every night. I also don't see why it's not worth getting ferry tickets in advance, we know when we are leaving x place to go to y so why not have that planned and everything else play by ear!
  • We went to Greece for 4 weeks last June and had an amazing time. We started in Crete then santorini, Mykonos, Delos, Tinos, andros and finished in Athens. My advice would be to prebook the ferries as you know where you'll be each night but to wait until you get to Greece and go into a ticket agency as that was much cheaper than the tickets I booked before we went and she also gave me maps and advice about each island. With regards to places to eat, we were backpacking and doing it on the cheap, the gyros were amazing! If you like Greek history then Delos (boat trip from Mykonos) and akrotiri are worth visiting. But have an amazing time!!
