Spent some time in Copenhagen and they have a place called Tivoli Gardens in the centre of the city thats beautiful at this time of year. Many markets and ice rinks. I've not been to Frankfurt in the winter months but Copenhagen wowed me so that one gets my thumbs up!
one thing to note that Denmark uses the Krone so if you already have Euros, Frankfurt might be a little easier.0 -
I had an 8hr layover in Frankfurt a couple of years ago and went to their Christmas Market, which is held in the old town, down by the river. It was really cool, with the tallest Christmas tree I've ever seen and a two tier carousel as the centre piece.
When it comes to Christmas markets I've been spoilt by working in Manchester for many years, which is repluted to be the largest Christmas market in Europe. Even so, my favourite market is still Salzburg. There's something very special about the setting under Monchsberg mountain in the Dom platz, and if you're lucky enough to catch an alp horn carol concert on the steps of the cathedral, it's a memory that stays with you for life. I'm currently planning a trip back to Salzburg for the Christmas market after being a little disappointed with Brussels last Christmas.0 -
Thanks both ☺ will do a bit more research, but good to know they are both good. Will check out Salzberg as well! xbig bad debts: Gone!

Do you mean Frankfurt FRA or Frankfurt Hahn HHN?
If the latter, there's flibco buses to Trier.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
I did Copenhagen last Christmas, and although I really like the city and have been a few times, it wasn't as Christmassy as I thought. This could be to do with the fact that the city has major work going on in many of the main squares for the new metro system. However, as someone else mentioned Tivoli was wonderful at Christmas and definitely worth visiting. Also you can take a 20 journey on the train to Sweden and visit Malmo (different currency though).0

Not been to Frankfurt, but my better half took me to Copenhagen for a big birthday this summer. Copenhagen is very nice, however food and drink are very expensive. If you're a foodie or a big drinker, I'd advise you to look elsewhere. Even if you're not, I'd make sure that you book a hotel with breakfast included, so that it can keep you going for the day.0

Not been to Frankfurt but have done Christmas markets in several German cities and they were all great. Have done Copenhagan and agree Tivoli a great place. The weather was very wet when we went so did not seem as Christmassy as some places. The train trip across the bridge to Malmo was good - a lovely smaller city with its own Christmas shops.2025 Decluttering Campaign 546/2025 🏅🏅🏅🏅(🏅🏅) 🌟🌟

Thanks all; from your replies and a wee bit of research online I would have been happy with a lot of German / Austrian cities or Copenhagen.....as it turns out, we went with which flights suited us best datewise etc and it was Copenhagen. Flights booked and what looks like a great wee airbnb apartment booked and looking forward to it ☺ Thanks for all the tips and Tivoli Gardens is on our list xxbig bad debts: Gone!

I've had surprisingly good times in Frankfurt but never been there at Christmas. Its a city that rewards you with revisiting.
I was in Munich and Salzburg over the Christmas/New Year period last year and although Salzburg was great to visit and a fantastic historic city, I found Munich outclassed it considerably on the Christmas Market/festive variety front and was also markedly cheaper and free of the worse sort tourist rip-off overpricing.0 -
Copenhagen is lovely. Tivoli gardens with an old fashioned rollorcoaster rides and lovely little markets! I went to Vienna last year and that was also as lovely at christmas time with markets and lovely little shops!0
