Mobility Scooter Help Needed.

I bought a 2nd hand mobility scooter but i am having trouble charging it, i have had it on charge for over 12 hours and i then got on and started it but it only went for about 2 mins and then stopped, i know the charger works as the red light goes on and the other light permanently stays orange when it should go green to let me know the batteries are fully charged. I'm confused as it does seem to charge the batteries but only for a few mins and then the scooter dies. Do i need to buy new batteries, i'm thinking i may have to but the one's for my shoprider MD4 are over £80 for the 2. I have checked all the connections and they are all secure, i have checked the fuses but they seem to be ok and all the lights and indicators work too. I'm hoping someone can help me out here as i really cannot afford the £80 for new one's. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sue

This is exactly the symptoms you would expect for dead batteries.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-Lucas-AGM-12V-10AH-MOBILITY-SCOOTER-BATTERIES-FOR-SHOPRIDER-SUPERLIGHT-4-/191417757653?hash=item2c91632fd5 - is the superlight different?

In short - actually measure the batteries.
It will say on teh side of them '12V 10Ah' or something.
the 10Ah is the capacity - heavier larger batteries will generally have larger capacity.

If the capacity meets (or exceeds) and the batteries fit, and are designed for this use they will be fine - there are not special batteries made.

Look for ones that say 'mobility' or something in the listing.
In addition, in principle you can return the batteries within 10 days if they do not suit under the distance selling act.
  • Hi Roger. I have measured the batteries and it says they are 12V 33AH, it is on ebay where i found them for £80 which was the cheapest i could find, the dealer who was on the manual i got with the scooter wants £130 just for the batteries. I had a feeling it was the batteries so i will just have to bite the bullet and buy some. Thanks for your reply, it is much appreciated. Sue

Then yes - that would be about the right price.
    Good luck.
    Make sure the connectors match.
