Someone using my address and phone number?

Earlier this year I received a few phone-calls asking for someone by name who does not live at my address, I'll call them Ms A. I let the first one or two go as a wrong number, but then I noticed they were for the same person, so I started taking notes. One of the phone-calls was from some kind of legal advice service, and a few others were from allied union. One didn't say, but I googled their number and on one site people say that number is associated with some kind of broadband switching scam/service.

I got an answer machine around this time (as I receive so much spam myself) and the phone-calls for Ms A either have stopped or don't leave messages.

Now, I've started getting spam through the post for Ms A, several from one estate agents Chesterton's.

My family have lived at this address for 40 years+ and no one else has lived here in that time.

Is this some kind of scam, or someone abusing my address and phone number?

  • Could you phone the estate agent and ask how they got your address?

It might just be someone using your address rather than giving their own .

Just cross out the address, write "not at this address, return to sender", then shove back in post.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Last week we received a council tax statement letter addressed to my OH and I, but on the same day another one (at least I think it's another one, it's in the same kind of envelope from the council) also arrived with our address but someone else's name!

We've lived here for 5 years and the previous people didn't have the name on the letter either. These kind of things worry me :(

Anyway, hope you manage to get the calls/letters stopped OP! :)
  • I admit that sometimes when I want an online quote I usually make up an address and/or phone number so I won't get spammed. I just keep my fingers crossed it isn't someone's real details. Maybe something similar has happened here? Are you in the phone book?

nb. I am an actual Ms A. :o

If I do that I use my own road with a number 10 higher than the last extant.

That way it fits with the postcode and no one will start getting unwanted mail.

For phone numbers they never seem to check validity, just the correct number of digits, so 01999 999999 works.
