Trying to get some old tapes from a camcorder onto my dvd player

Options
So I've been told by a work colleage that its possible to take old video tapes to Jessops to get them converted to DVD but the price seems a little dear. I've got a lot of fond memories of the family growing up on tape.

I was wondering if there was a cheaper way to do it or if anywhere else would do it for less than jessops?

  • You can do it yourself with a reasonable spec PC and a video capture device (and a VHS player...)

    PC Magazine article.

You can take the opportunity to edit the tapes down and just select the best bits. (and put clips up on Facebook and things)

The video capture devices start at about £20 - £25 (Maplin)
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Well I didn't know you could buy this. I was worried about spending loads on some half empty tapes and not knowing what clips were on where so this is much better for me. Everyone is going to have a very embarrassing christmas thanks to you :)

What gear do you have at the moment? Do you have a replay device for the tapes? Any type of DVD recorder?

    from a camcorder
    Use the original camera

    onto my dvd player
take a look on Ebay for freeview dvd recorder with hard drive.

Check out your local recycling centre as there are usually a few in there.
  • I didnt even think of doing that!

I was going copy it to a laptop with one of those dongles and then burn it to a dvd but if i can borrow a dvd recorder i can just plug one into another.

Reminds me of the old VHS bootleg days :)
  • Alternatively there are people on ebay and the like that will do it for around £5 to £10 per tape

Depending on how many you have, it maybe worth considering

I only had 2 tapes to convert, so with postage etc it worked out as about £12 all in :)
