Printer advice

Options
Hello,

I want to buy a printer, main use would be print out school work and b&w print offs from sites. Looking for reliable printer, reasonable running cost with compatible cartridges(mainly replacing black cartridges only). Thanks

Epson ones are reliable i have never had a problem with them and you can get compatiables cheap enough from ebay etc , Argos have deals most of the time also check out larger supermarkets and check out the price of replacement ink before you buy

Be a bit careful with Epson and Windows 7. There are some reported issues with scanner drivers. I can't get an Epson to scan on my wifes laptop but Canon worked straight out of the box.

If b/w only then a budget Samsung laser printer is the obvious choice: from about £60.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You might want to look at HP Deskjet 1510 All-In-One Printer. No wifi though, but it is ludicrously cheap,
compact and low running costs (ink)
  • I used to always buy Epson for no other reason than the 'original cartridge ink' was cheaper. However, we currently have an HP all in one which we got from Tesco (mostly bought with vouchers). There's not much between them in ink costs now, and we liked the wireless function on the HP, which is good - we have it upstairs in the spare room and we can print to it from anywhere in the house. Not sure exactly which model but it was something like the 5510. Tesco have the 5530 on at £79 at the moment, which looks okay.
I'm not against compatible inks, as we've used them before, but we did have a bad batch which basically broke our old Epson before we got this HP. Our HP seems to work fine with Win10, and also as e-print so we can print from the tablet and mobile phone directly.

Don't be fooled into getting an inkjet printer, they might be cheaper to buy / run, however if not used frequently when you do come to print that important email / document and the damm thing is blocked and unusable you'll be cursing the printer. Best move I ever did (printing wise) was to get a (colour) laser jet printer. Yes it cost more (about £100) but I've not once had the sort of problems I'd get with the inkjet printers I'd always used before
