Relocation Help - Loans?

Hi there,

After being unemployed since March this year (I withdrew from University at this time), I've managed to get myself a job at Macmillan Cancer Care based in London. :j

My problem is that they are not offering any relocation support, and I have no money for relocating. This job will do wonders for my mental health and will obviously be enough to support me, however this obstacle is getting in the way! We need the money for deposits, moving costs etc - just general setting up really. I forgot to mention that I currenty live in Sheffield!

Does anybody know where I can get some financial assistance to help move? I've tried getting loans through the bank but cause I don't really have a credit history (I'm 22) I'm struggling to get accepted. My boyfriend is starting a bar job in London too, and he doesnt have the money either. I am estranged from my family, so have no-one to turn to.

Any help would be amazing, thank you!

Best wishes,
Jess

  • Have you tried the benefits office - sometimes they can help with social loans/rent deposits etc.

Hiya, thanks for the advice, I will try tomorrow and see if they can help. Do you think I should try my local benefits office in Sheffield, or approach one in London?

Are you aware of the cost of renting in London? A budgeting loan may be an option if you have been in receipt of JSA for more than six months, but it won't even nearly cover the costs you need.
  • renting a room and not a flat I hope? much less deposit required.

Hi, yeah I know it is expensive in London, but it's where the jobs I want to do are (I've not had much luck in Sheffield). I didn't qualify for Job Seekers as I hadn't contributed enough NI - had a nightmare trying to get help through benefits this year. Thanks for your advice though!

I'm looking on places like SpareRoom and GumTree, so hoping something will come along...

Ask your new employer if there is some kind of noticeboard in the office. If so, you could post a message asking if someone who works there has a spare room that you could rent for a while. That would give you a chance to get established in London.
  • Beware advertisers that take a deposit on a room or property when they do not actually own it themselves.

Take deposits off 20 people and vanish, the first you know about it is when you try to move in with 20 other people and the owner saying they have no idea what your on about.
