Lost job. cancelling Virgin

Hi,

My sister recently lost her job and as part of cost cutting needs to get rid of her TV subscription.

Ive contacted Virgin for her and tried the usual, even asked them to reduce her package down to the minimum but they are totally unhelpful. Best thing they have done is offer a discount from 48.99 to 45.99 as she's in contract.

Ive told them she doesn't have any options but to cancel the DDM and seek advice from citizens advice bureau.

Any suggestions on how to cancel?

Stop the DD may well be the start of trouble as its a contract and then becomes a debt .

Is she in contract or at the end of a contract and now on a 30 day rolling contract .
  • You can normally downgrade your package while in contract with them, Ive done it a few times

as said , keep paying otherwise the debt ballons

get her to post a SOA on the debt part of the forum (or you do it) and look at other areas for cutting back (food bills etc )

Thanks for the advice. i can downgrade her to the minimum of £38, if i cancel the broadband and phone she will have a £270 cancellation fee.

Looks like i have no choice but to suggest she takes the downgrade, be tied in for another 12 months and pay the reduced amount.

    Sending a letter may help.

    Thanks

She'll need the phone and broadband if she's lost her job to be able to find another job so I would not cut that even if she's in debt.

You need a full breakdown of the bill.

If she's had a TiVo box then cancelling will be difficult without having to pay for it's full cost.

TiVo has no cost - it is rented by the viewer, so the only cost is the minimum term commitment. You can terminate early and lose all services, but a job seeker requires BB and a phone. Basic TV is a minimal cost as multiplay offers discounts.

Any non payment will be added to the credit file, so it is better to persevere and treat this as a must-have.

Losing your job, or any other change in financial circumstances, does not void the contract that was agreed. The only way to void a contract without penalty is death or bankruptcy.
So VM are not being 'unhelpful', they are simply holding her to the minimum term contract, as would any other supplier.
