Hi,sparkiemalarkie wrote: »I didn't get the grating noise with this washing machine though.
I had the following symptoms....
3 washes ago- squealing noise at the start of the spin cycle- disappeared when the drum was emptied of clothes - improved when the spin speeded up.
2 washes ago - squealing started sooner in the cycle
last wash - squealing started on the rinse part of the cycle then the drum stopped turning.
The machine will fill and empty ok. The belt is ok no smell of burning.
thanks

Sounds as though your brushes are completely gone and you now have metal on metal.
May have damaged the commutator, that's the bit the brushes make contact with, so may now mean a new motor, though if damage slight commutator can be rubbed down with strips of carborundum paper.0 -
Consider buying a new more economic machine as well. I realise that as a Bosch it was probably a better machine than others of it's time but in sure it will have been superseded by others today. Xxx0

I've used this service a couple of times and found it very good: http://www.repairandprotect.co.uk/
You get a fixed price quote, so while it may end up being expensive (if it turns out to be a trivial fix), if a new motor or other parts are required there will be nothing extra to pay. The quote also includes a year's warranty on the whole machine, so they will come and fix any issues over the next year, and if the machine breaks beyond economic repair you will get a new one. You can pay in installments by direct debit or as a lump sum.
If the machine is beyond economic repair to start with, you pay nothing, not even a call-out charge.
Seems like a good arrangement to me.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
This could have been me 3 weeks ago.
Bosch machine and everything!
Its apparently very rarely the motor but is usually the brushes. If the machine is filling up and emptying fine its the brushes, especially if you use the machine a lot.
Hubby turned machine on its side(Not entirely recommended but did the job for us) unbolted and unclipped the motor, brushes were completely worn.
£4 on Ebay 10 mins later, perfectly working silent machine, saving us £400Member for a long time only recent poster
***THANK YOU***
To all those who post comps, no wins yet though!0 -

Yep, that was me this morning!
Washing machine on it's side trying to find the right screw driver.
I hope it is the brushes- they were worn right down to the copper wire!
I have managed to get the old brushes out without taking off the motor and I'm hoping to get the new ones in the same way.
I have ordered new brushes from eSpares and paid for next day delivery, but they still haven't been dispatched.
I used the chat on eSpare to find the brushes I needed (otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue)
Fingers crossed they arrive tomorrow and do the trick.
