How do font compatibility with browsers work?

I have got a ecommerce store that I want to improve the font on. It uses Bootstrap, that utilizes Font Awesome.Does the browser only display what it knows or use the external link to the font library? How does this work across other browser Edge, IE, Opera etc?

For example, if I add Lato or Droid that are Google Fonts they don't display in Chrome. They just refer to the next on the list.

Also, why are some in quotes and others not (eg."Palatino Linotype", "Book Antiqua", Palatino, serif)

  • You need to ensure the document is calling the Font Awesome file.

Quotes are for fonts which have more than one word and so they don't get confused by the code as being different fonts, ie "Palatino Linotype".

Depends on what the ecommerce store is built with, and how it supports fonts.
You can effectively embed specific fonts into web sites, but it may require extra work and access.
Best place to look is in help for the web site development tools, assuming there are some. Not all browsers, especially older versions, will support the latest styling techniques. As you can never be sure what browser customers are using, it can lead to problems...
