How much receipts to keep?

  • For personal receipts I will only hold on to those that may act as a warranty for something until I remember to have a clear out. For consumables like the weekly shop, restaurant, coffee shop etc I will shred them once they appear on my account online which is usually a couple of days. I figure I can't take stuff back that I've already consumed and once it's on my statement I won't need to challenge an error.

Yes,that's exactly what I do as well. Unless it's a warranty for something I've bought I keep the debit/credit slips until it appears on my bank a/c and then the receipts are shredded.
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.

I haven't checked exact dates but I reckon I have all my card receipts from the last 20 years or so. The last few years are kept in a folder, the rest are in a carrier bag. It would be nice if they were a bit more organised as it's a pain to try to find the one you want when you need it.

Insurers will generally take your word for it, we were burgled a few years ago and claimed over £10k with little in the way of receipts.

Depends on the circumstances and the insurer but I would say that insurers will not generally take your word for it, especially if they smell a rat.

It is wise to keep receipts for all items you may need to claim for, especially if you can't prove the purchase via bank/credit card statements.
