HELP PLEASE! End of contract bill

Options
After moving out of our shared student house (3 people) I gave meter readings to Spark Energy and was expecting a refund as I felt our monthly direct debits (£153 for gas & electric) were quite high. However, I received a bill for another £500! Then I have just received another bill saying that it's now £614. There doesn't seem to have been any recalculations, it just seems like it has been done in duplicate, yet they are different calculations.

Basically both bills I find astounding, so I was hoping for some advice before I call to query/complain. Also, we are all mature students doing second degrees in our late 20's/early 30's so we have dealt with energy bills before and this seems ridiculous compared to the usage. We also have a direct comparison to the previous year as we were living there for almost 2 years.

The bill is long and to complicated to type out on here but I would be happy to send a copy of it to anyone kind enough to glance over it for me. Basically it says we have used 6705kwh electricity and 41360kwh gas between 3/09/2013 and 19/06/2015 at a charge of £1216 and £1909 respectively. We have the direct debit saver tariff which has two different rates for day and night.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

If you thought your monthly payments were too high at the time, why did you not challenge them?

Anyway, it looks like you were possibly mistaken.

Now you have a bill, is it correct? If so, you'll have to pay it.
If not, then you will need to explain to the supplier whay you think it's incorrect. No " I find astounding" or "this seems ridiculous", just stick to the facts.

Do you actually understand the bill?
I see you don't want to type it all out, so just make a legible copy, upload it somewhere, and tell us where you've uploaded it. Then someone maybe able to explain it to you.

Otherwise, call the supplier and ask them to take you through it. Or take the bill to the CAB and ask them to assist you in understanding it.

Based on the usage figures you give (do you think they are correct?), then the cost seems a little high, but that would depend on the tariff you agreed to, and how much, or rather little, you made of the cheap rate electricity available.

For future reference, this MSE article describes how to get yourself the best energy deal for you :)

You 'felt' the instalment was big enough - did you ever read your meters and see how much you were using? Check how much it would cost?

6,700 kWh electricity is fair enough for fifteen months. 41,000 kWh is pretty high but does cover two winters. If little insulation then possible - if the flat was insulated then check that you do not have a metric meter but are being charged for an imperial meter.

£1216 for 6,705 kWh is a crazy price for electricity - trouble is you mention day and night so if you were on an E7 tariff with no storage heaters then you have made a big mistake. 18p per kWh is horrible - you ought to have at least switched to a different supplier for electricity. The gas is a sane enough price per kWh.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're not happy with your final bill.

If you drop me an email using the address in my profile, I'd be happy to check everything over, and give you a better explanation of the figures we've come to.

All I'd need is your full name, your forum name and your supply address.

Hope to hear from you soon.
