    If you're on a meter, the price will be based on usage. You may find usage reduces with only one of you, but probably not quite by half.

    Not sure about living costs in Pontefract, but I'd have thought on £25k with £525 rent, you're not going to do badly. I'm on a similar wage in Surrey (so not cheap), and I could just about cover all our living costs (mortgage, bills, groceries, etc. for 2 adults & 2 dogs). Not much spare cash, but I imagine Pontefract is a bit cheaper to live in.

    Back to the household bills portion of this - We are on metered water and electric, however when I set these up, they based their prices on two people living here, so couldn't they readjust their estimations for single occupancy? Or am I seeing this as too black and white? Sorry, I have no idea about these sorts of things.

    If you're on a meter, then the utility companies will have set up your initial direct debit based on an estimate of average use for two people in that size of property. However, after that, they'll take regular meter readings and adjust what you're charged based on what you're actually using. Sometimes, if you're overpaying the gas/electricity providers will hang on to your money and keep your account 'in credit' ostensibly for if you end up underpaying in colder weather etc. Water companies don't tend to do that though.

    Is this your first time living away from home or have you always let your partner take care of this stuff? Have you ever received a paper bill and sat down and read it? Its a good idea to be familiar with how these things work, you can save yourself a lot of money if you keep on top of it and switch to the best deals etc.
  • Would your landlord allow you to have someone in to share?

    I was going to suggest finding a housemate to share the costs with.

    £25k would give about £1675 of take home so would still leave about £1100 for bills and food - have you got any other big outgoings like car hp?

    As the OP mentions a child, presumably he is paying maintenance.

    tell the landlord your situation has changed and you can afford the extra rent .they may let you stay .

    If you have no ties to the area anymore this might be a great time to see if your work has oportunities in other parts of the country (if with the same company they might pay relocation too) or investigating cheaper areas that are still within reach of work. Make the timing of the rental agreement work for you.

    Duchy, funny you mention work. At the minute, my notice period is only a week (still on 6 month probation), so there is the chance to move back to Nottingham where all my friends and family are, although it seems a lot harder to find a new job as well as new place to live. Although I could always houseshare for the meantime with the longterm goal to be to move back to Nottingham after I've got some savings together for a new place.
